Wilmington, Delaware

The City of Wilmington is located in New Castle County, Delaware. As of July 2016, the city had a population of 199,827 people. It is the county seat of New Castle County.

The City of Wilmington covers an area of approximately 19 square miles (50 km2). It is bordered by Newark Bay to the north; Brandywine Creek to the south; Christina Lake to the west; and Claymont to the east.

Wilmington is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Wilmington is home to the University of Delaware, one of three state universities in Delaware. The university enrolls about 16,000 students each semester and is known for its academic excellence and athletic programs.

Wilmington is also home to the International Center of Photography, founded in 1936, and the National Museum of American Art, founded in 1960.

Wilmington is the birthplace of author Stephen King. He spent his early childhood living in the town of Leeds, Maine, just outside of Portland.

Wilmington is served by Wilmington/Newark Airport, which serves commercial flights. Amtrak trains stop here daily.

Government

The Wilmington City Council consists of 13 members. There are 8 district seats and 5 at-large seats. Each member serves a 4-year term. District seats are represented by one person per district. At-large seats are elected by the entire city. The City Council President is elected by all the members of the City Council. The Mayor of Wilmington is elected by the entire City Council. The current mayor of Wilmington, Michael R. Purzycki (D), was sworn into office on January 2, 2013. He won re-election in 2017.

The Wilmington Delaware Family History Center is located halfway down the building next door to the main entrance of the National Archives Building. This center provides genealogical research assistance to researchers throughout the United States and around the world.

Wilmington, Delaware, is known for many things: the nation’s oldest continually operating newspaper; the birthplace of the Wright Brothers; and the location where the DuPont chemical company began manufacturing gunpowder. The Hagley Museum & Library is the original site of the Ewing I. du Pont Gunpowder Company, the first major industrial enterprise in the state. Visitors can see how the gunpowder works operated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

At the Nemours Mansion & Garden, you'll find the largest formal French gardens outside France. The house itself is a magnificent example of French Château style, with elegant rooms, ornamental fireplaces and elaborate plasterwork. The grounds are filled with beautiful statuary and fountains.

Nemours was designed by famed architect Horace Trumbauer, whose work included New York City's Pennsylvania Station and the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. The mansion is surrounded by a lush parkland and expansive lawns, perfect for picnicking and strolling.

Jewish Historical Society of Delaware

The Archives of the Jewish Historical society of Delaware (JHS) are located at the Delaware Center for Jewish Studies at the Coxe House Museum, a National Historic Landmark. The JHS holds approximately 40,000 items documenting the lives of Jews in Delaware since 1638. Items include photographs, books, periodicals, maps, manuscripts, ephemera, artwork, and documents.

Wander The Jaw-Dropping Nemours Estate

The Nemours Estate was the home of the late industrial giant and philanthropist Alfred Iverson duPont. DuPont built his fortune manufacturing explosives during World War II. He later turned his attention to building hospitals and schools across the United States. In fact, he donated $100 million to build the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.

DuPont died in 1971, and his wife sold the estate to the state of Delaware in 1973. Afterward, it became known as the Nemours Mansion and Gardens. Today, visitors can tour the grounds, including the 10-acre French-style garden, which features sculptures, fountains, and manicured hedges.

History On The Wilmington Riverfront

The Riverfront is also the site of the, a full scale replica of a 17th century, three masted, square rigged, gun armed merchant ship. The ship provides sailings throughout the summer months, with day sails, Pirate Sails, and a Halloween Ghost Ships Sail.

The Kalmar Nyckel is a popular destination for visitors interested in learning about the history of the area. The park features a large pond filled with fish, a playground, picnic tables, and walking paths around the pond.

Tubman-Garrett Park commemorates Harriet Tubman, an African American woman who led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Tubman lived in a house located at 227 Shipley Street, which is now part of the Old Swedes Historical Society. Visitors can tour the historic site and view items related to her life.

Old Swedes Historic Site is a living museum dedicated to preserving the history of early Swedish immigrants. The site includes the Old Swedes Church, built in 1639, the 17th Century Hendrickson House, and a 1638 burial ground.
